Creating permeable paths and water buffering ponds
Province of Antwerp and Streekvereniging Zuidrand
Executive/implementing
Dense City and Country side between towns
The urban areas south of Antwerp are densely populated. Often localised flooding occurs after heavy rainfall. The Province of Antwerp and Streekvereniging Zuidrand have teamed up with local municipalities to create semipermeable paths and water buffering ponds at 7 different locations: Aartselaar, Borsbeek, Edegem, Kontich, Lint, Mortsel and Hove.
In total 2 km of semipermeable surfaces will be installed on pathways that connect urban areas so that citizen’s feet stay dry after rain showers. The new pathways will also increase the number of pedestrians and cyclists in the area. This will have positive effects on mobility, air quality and health.
